Def at pump

My local fuel station just installed a huge def tank and they are now selling def at the pumps for about $4.25 a gallon. This is much cheaper than I get the 2.5 gal jugs for.
My question is.. Are there any issues with getting Def at the fuel pump? Ive never done it before, but it sure seems convenient !

Depends on how much they sell. The reason most buy at the pump is the freshness of the DEF rather than risking buying it in the box store.

It was about $2.69 this time last year. At the pump is the only way to go as far as I’m concerned.

Many truck lanes (where DEF pumps typically are) do not take credit cards, so you either have to have a company/fuel card or go inside to pay. There's a Maverik near me that takes credit cards at the truck lanes while the local Pilot does not. YMMV.

I've bought and used THOUSANDS of gallons of DEF from the truck stop pumps over the last 10 years, and BILLIONS and BILLIONS of gallons have been sold and used by 18 wheelers all over the world for longer than that.
So, buying at the pump is no issue at all and is convenient and as you already have noted, will save you lots of money.
One place along one of my routes sells DEF at the pump for $2.99 a gallon, another is $3.29, but most big truck stops sell it for about $4 a gallon.
So, buy your DEF wherever it is cheapest, it's all the same, it's a spec formula.

I don’t think there is much variance in the standard of different makes of the stuff. Assuming its a reputable company supplying it.

Be very mindful while refueling to only put diesel in the diesel hole and DEF in the DEF hole. A mistake will more than wipe out any savings from buying DEF at the pump. I don't have a diesel but have read the horror stories on this forum.

The one time I pumped DEF from a truck stop the DEF nozzle was so gunked up with DEF residue that I had to knock the nozzle on the concrete to get some of it off. In the past, the pump price versus the Wal-mart brand was close enough that I felt there was no advantage to buying at the pump. I have the TSD Logistics (now known and Open Roads) card that lets me pump diesel and DEF in the big rig lanes.

Open roads card. Pay at the truck stop pump and buy only the def that my tank holds. Since 2018 that is all I've ever put in my trucks that required def save for the three boxes I was forced to buy in an area that had no def at the pump. Even now it's still cheaper at the pump. The last box of def I bought at TSC was $16 for 2.5 gallons. After tax that's almost $7/gallon. Last tank of def at the pumps was $4/gallon. Pretty easy math for me. Plus never have to worry about freshness of the boxes of def on the shelf or storing/hauling them around.

My issue buying DEF at the pumps is purely mental. I've seen many posts where damage to the fuel system was claimed to be contaminated DEF (user error....) and warranty denied. I worry that there will be contamination in the bulk supply that gets pumped in the truck. With packaged DEF at least I know there was no middle man between the jug and the tank. Again, a mental concern probably unfounded. But I don't use enough DEF to worry about the price (much).

When you pump DEF at the pump, only open one tank at a time, don't open the diesel and the DEF caps at the same time. Not only to avoid putting the wrong filler in the wrong hole, but in case you splash DEF while moving the nozzle around, Splash some in your fuel filler and it winds up in the pump. Aside from that, pump DEF is the way to go instead of the carry boxes.

Damage to fuel system isn't because of contaminated DEF, it is because the fuel system WAS contaminated WITH DEF, in other words, DEF pumped into the fuel tank. And, that could happen with packaged DEF same as with DEF from the pump.

And, the same companies that supply the bulk DEF to the truck stops also make the DEF in the jugs.

And, as I stated above, BILLIONS of gallons of DEF has been sold from the truck pumps over the years with hardly any issues.

But, you suit yourself, if you don't care about the money you waste on overpriced jugs of DEF, go for it.
And, while you're at it, I'm not above any monetary donations to my favorite charity, namely, MYSELF!

Pumping at the big rig lanes is intimidating enough for folks new to diesel. Add DEF to that and ...

The first time I pumped DEF I had someone come out and show me how to do it. The DEF station wasn't intuitively obvious. It was a slow day at a smaller truck stop so I wasn't holding anyone up.
