I have a 94 with a 4.9 and I keep having fuel pump problems. It has the rear steel tank and changing the pumps can be a hassle. I have tried several pumps and they just don’t last. I have considered taking an external frame mounted pump and completely by-passing the in tank pump. I know the external probably won’t pull thru the in tank pump, so I was going to see about gutting it out and just use it to hold the sending unit. I would still have the in tank sock, a pre filter before the pump and the inline filter after the pump. I have four wires going into the tank which would be easy to identify. The gas line would have the end to connect to the pump and the only line I would have to make would be the one from the tank to the pump. I don’t have to worry much about pressure as long as it can maintain a higher pressure than the regulator. The reason I’m looking to do this is because no more than I drive this truck, the pumps just don’t last fore some reason. I only drive the truck around 500 miles a year. The pump that’s on it has only about 40 miles on it. Seems like I have to replace the pump every time I go to drive it. Anyone have any thoughts for this? Am I over looking something that would be dangerous? I’m just thinking of how to make a more permanent fix on it. Thanks for the advice in advance.
That’s odd. I put Spectra pumps and gas tanks in my ‘89 F-150 eight years ago and haven’t touched them since. Maybe it is from sitting so long between use or the pumps you have been buying?
Interestingly enough, I was also considering the possibility of adding a second, external pump. I've run another Ford this way for a few years without issue - a high-pressure in-tank pump feeding a high-pressure external pump.
When your pumps have failed has it just been a 100%, on/off failure? I'm only getting 6PSI, so the pump is clearly getting power, just not getting adequate pressure.
What pump(s) are you using? I'll admit, mine is just some cheap (probably made in China), after-market pump.
