So l have a 91 with an IDI engine. I have had it for a few years. Got it from a friend who has a salvage yard. Anyway, the starter is heading south. I have seen cheap gear reduction starters on Amazon and wondering if someone has had experience with them and if it's worth the money to buy a name brand one. Seems like there is a Powwrmaster for like 250. Thanks!
see if there is a reputable rebuilder near you.
last one i had done was $89. a good shop will usualy have them on the shelf and just swap your old one for a good one.
the guy i use is running the shop his grandfather started around 80 years ago.
The reman starters from autozone are very good, long lasting, and come with a lifetime warranty. I've bought one for each truck and I never had to buy a second one. No questions asked. In the few times I've had to swap them out over the years. Can't beat that.
I'd go with a local shop, or rebuild my own before buying one from the auto parts store. Parts from the auto parts store can be bad in-the-box. I've had plenty of vacuum pumps, brake boosters and alternators fail from the auto parts store. I guess the lifetime warranty is convenient, but who wants to keep replacing a starter that fails?
BTW, make sure you replace that top bolt with one that's 6-8" long with a nylon stop nut on it to keep the starter tight. It will be easier to R/R the starter next time you have to do it.
my reason for going local is i know what i am getting. mass "rebuilders" tend to clean and replace the one bad part and call it "rebuilt" .
locals know there name and livelyhood is on the line, and know if they want to stay in business to do it rite.
when my guy rebuilds a starter, alternator, or and other automotive motor, the are completely dissembled, and everything is replaced.
and he can do it cheaper than a parts house most of the time too.
