I cannot find a zf5 trans with a 4x4 output In Minnesota.
If anyone in the the upper Midwest could help me out, please reach out.
I can shell out about $600, maybe more for the right unit.
Different gear ratios also. I'm sure the Ford engineers knew the diesel trans needed the gear ratios best to keep the diesel, just grunting and pulling, and the gas ZF5's got a wider spaced gear, so they could have a chance to get their RPM's up. I think that's how they did it, if my quick google search didn't tell me no lies.
If that's the case, I suppose putting a gas trans in a diesel would be better than putting a diesel trans in a gas, especially if an N/A diesel, cus they need to rev to keep their momentum going anyway, but still, I wouldn't do it. I remember seeing the photos back along and you can tell, it weakened the bellhousing.... enough to crack or break?......... I suspect over the years eventually, but I dunno. Just a guess.
Depending on how often you still use the truck and what for, you could consider a C6 auto swap. If you're only putting on 3-5k miles per year and no interstate speeds, or of course for just a yard/farm truck, it's an affordable option. I wouldn't do it for anything I drove a lot of course. Just something to consider. I'd suspect you could find a diesel C6 a lot cheaper than a ZF5, but that's speculation cus I haven't looked, but I think it's a good guess.

The cable operated modulator is an option for RWD trucks. The mechanism doesn't fit in a 4x4 truck though.
Nick is a member here, @genscripter He rebuilt my VRV. A+ for price and speedy service.
For a time I was considering having a reverse pattern, full-manual valve body installed in my C6. I'm glad that I got my VRV rebuilt instead. Just know what you're getting into if you consider a C6.
