I get ads all the time regarding my 2024 F450. Banks, Sinister Diesel, etc. Some of the stuff appears legit. But for someone who just wants their truck to live a happy, healthy life, are there upgrades or modifications that really make sense?
My 450 spends the majority of its life pulling our toy hauler or sitting in the barn for weeks at a time. Very little stop and go / daily driver stuff. Lots of interstate towing around 70 mph keeps everything happy. Oil changes with T6 every 6500 miles or so, fuel filters every 15,000 miles, and a little dose of Diesel Kleen every tank.
But are the differential covers, charge pipes, and various other changes a good idea for someone who just wants their truck to stay happy towing for several hundred miles at a time?
No. Your truck was extensively designed by Ford to tow “several hundred miles at a time”. Anything else is just a company trying to separate money from your wallet to theirs.
I look at the aftermarket as complementing what Ford didn't do well. No drain plug for trans pan, have to remove rear dif cover to replace fluid- I'm installing covers and pans that allow me to easily service those components.
If you plan on keeping it for a long time consider a fuel pump, cold side pipe, and hubs. My extended warranty will be ending so I will be looking at a new fuel pump later this year.
Much of the aftermarket stuff is just a gimmick and they sometimes cause you to fiddle with things you never would have if you just stayed with the factory parts. Occasionally they make sense and provide benefit. If you like the way your truck is now, I'd leave it be.
i like em stock that way also, money goes into more driving convenience aids, some tint/brow strip, vent visors, carpet dash mat in black (no windshield reflecting dash back at you focusing you outside plus it holds stuff you set on it well like binoculars etc. plus it protects dash from sun), good floor mats, good box accessories (tonneau etc.), mudflaps if you need them, auxillary lighting options as we do a lot of weekend warrior work and often driving or getting back to camp in the dark, but like to take stock mechanical back to the dealer for regular maintenances, if i were doing services/maintenance i'd look at things to make that easier/faster like mentioned above...
