88 F-250. Now I know why the PO likely bypassed the heater core. Probably not leaking, just blowing ONLY hot air. It is OK to have it bypassed in FL, I guess. I however, want BOTH heat and A/C, like the truck was designed to have. Or if not A/C, just not always roasting my ***** off. I had this problem on another Ford I used to have, but I never fixed it, just didn't drive it in the summer (had no A/C anyways) and was in MN, so I NEEDED the heat much of the year.
I am thinking the "blend door" has a malfunction, but not sure. Anybody have any suggestions? How is it to diagnose/repair the blend door myself? Thanks. Chuck.
You should be able to pop the glove box out and see the blend door control cable mounted there on the heater core housing. Move the control back and forth from cold to hot and see if the cable moves (as in, only the inner metal wire should move, the outer black plastic casing should have a clip that holds it stationary). If the wire seems to be moving correctly, then check to make sure the end of it is actually hooked on to the blend door. It may have came loose.
Yeah, the cable moves, but the clip is gone, and part of the black casing is gone. Will that keep the blend door from actuating? Thanks, looks like it may be junkyard time. Cheers.
Yeah, that black outer casing has to remain clamped down to something stationary or else the whole thing will just move and the wire inside wont push hard enough against the door to actually move it. Try holding the black part in your hand and then moving the hot/cold selector and you should be able to get the blend door to move over to the other side. It'll make a distinctive 'flap' sound that you probably never heard in that truck before if it hasn't been working right since you got it. I think Autozone has those little clips that hold the cable down or you could even pick something up at a hardware store. Just about anything will work that you can screw into the heater core housing and will hold the cable still. Best of luck.
Cool, thanks a lot. I need some more black casing, too. I think I will go to the yard at least to get a new cable (or try autozone/napa) and make a clip to hold it. Let you guys know what happens.
