Hi all, new to posting, but not too the board,, I have a 2000 F-350 with 6.8. V-10, 4x4. I got a set of short tube headers and was wondering if anyone here has them, and how did they install them, I tried the drivers side and had alot of problems and had to put the manifold back on..
Headers are a good torque booster. You have to pull the dipstick on the drivers side. I found taking a knife and trimming the inner fender plastic helps somewhat. Also, take a open end/ box end wrench and cut in in half with a hacksaw. This allows you to get at the bolts to tighten after header installation. It took me about 7 hours on the garage floor, just hard to reach things. I went with Borla, and everything went in really well, mated to their y-pipe and converter beautifully. Put the front end on jackstands and pull the front wheels, too. It's not rocket science, just a bitch.
I agree it isn't any easy task. I did mine in 6+ hours without shop air tools. YES it is worth the overall gains, you may feel a power loss at the low end but the power moves up the RPM band.
Burnt1, sorry to hear of the head bolts breaking off. I shot mine with liquid wrench the night before the dirty deed. It's going to be tough to get those out of there. You may have to remove the upper shock mount to get to them?
Soak the snot out of them with Liquid Wrench and let it sit over night. If they broke off flush or deeper with the head you're gonna need a set of extractors and that means drilling (clearance) Best to be real patient working these out, or it gets worse fast. You can sometimes get lucky by using a Dremel and cutting a slot for a screwdriver in the broken stud, again patience is the key. If all else fails you may end up pulling the head to have it drilled out (no fun, muy downtime)
www.centuryperformance.com Borla 17185 $659.99 Even have a a volume discount. Banks header kit runs about $1000. Bummer on breaking the studs... I wonder, if you tried to remove the nuts while holding the studs with a wrench if that would help any. The nuts are stamped making them harder to remove. Wait till you get to the passenger side.. Talk about tight... Remove the fender liner there for sure.
Hey burnt1 check out my post in V10 forum -my headers installed
you can save a lot of headache if you read that first. They were hard to install, but worth it.I gained low end trq after install. All of my studs came out with the nuts. You have to drill out the bolt holes on the headers, get the whole scoop in that post.
