Dana 70 “alignment pins”?

Well, I was luckily able to find a set of wheels to replace the two that were rusted through on my 1965 f-350, I did notice though that they didn’t have the holes for the “alignment pin” on the rear hubs. I’m not sure if that’s the right name for it, I’ll post it with some pics later. It is a small unthreaded pin that sticks out in the direction of the lugs and corresponds with a matching hole in the rim. What exactly does it “align”? The taper of the lug nut seats? I assume that I could probably drill the hole myself as long as a I put it in the right position?
Thanks in advance!

Earl

On dually's it is supposed to ensure valve stem alignment with wheel opening's... You can remove the pin, but you will always have to be sure, the inner wheel valve stem is aligned with the outer wheel opening.
