marooned away from my tools

I think my gas got siphoned. Parked out of sight for days. Just put a few gallons in before parking. (No stab wounds in tank, but I left vehicle unlocked.) Cranked it like crazy. Put a gallon in. Gauge deflected. (It didn't before) Fuel rail zert sprays when depressed. Cranks at high speed. Charged battery. Cranks and skips like it wants to start.

Flooded? Timing? Weak pump from running dry?

I don't remember it cranking as fast before. Almost like bad valve timing.

3.0 V6 with 5 speed

If you were able to crank it for a while, with fuel but no fire, then it's probably flooded. I think the trick to clear that up is to fully open the throttle, then crank again.

But check to see if it's getting spark at the plugs before you go further.

Three things needed to start - fuel, spark, compression and a way to turn the engine. If it's getting all three, it will at least backfire if the timing is off.

update

Brought my test tools to the van. I thought I'd see if a couple days sitting changed anything. First turn of key it turned over and quit. 2nd turn it cranked a bit then ran a couple seconds with a heavy shake/knock.

The shaking is probably from not firing on all cylinders? There is no knock or shake while cranking.

update 2

Tried again after posting previous update. It stayed running, but very rough. Got it to gradually smooth out at higher rpm then it idled better. Not perfect, but could get to be normal at full temperature.

Maybe there was water in the bottom of the tank?

Check for proper ventilation. If there is a hissing sound when opening the gas cap then there maybe is vacuum build-up in the tank. The relief-valve usualy sitts in the cap, you may try to start and drive the van without cap for a test-drive.

venting

The internal filler door is broken and always open. (makes it easier to siphon!) Also the pump/sending unit electrical connector seal is bad (again!) so it is not even liquid-tight, let alone airtight. Have to be careful not to fill all the way or gas seeps through.

Drove it home no problem. Except other drivers!

This thing has 320k on it and the body is shot. Probably going to park it for good next month after the tag expires.
