Actually just getting started. Removed the overflow tank and drained the radiator. Something I remembered was that as soon as I added / topped off the reservoir the overheating happened. Is it possible that the cap on the reservoir not fitting tight enough could cause the problem?
No, the only thing that would happen if the cap isn’t sealing well is you’d get coolant coming out when it gets hot. How hot did it actually get? Do you datalog while you’re towing or just use the gauges?

The opposite could also happen. On my 7.3 Excursion it kept building pressure and I couldn't figure out why. I thought I somehow blew the heads, on a whim, I remembered Bill Hewitt's advice and got a new Motorcraft Radiator cap, that solved my problem.
Actually when it overheated the coolant was coming from the area around / under the reservoir cap.
I would start with a new cap, fill the system and go for a drive, if your cap was faulty and supposed to hold till XXpsi and let go prior too, you will get the spooge out, as I said previously, this is what happened on my Sno-cat when the cap gave up, would get hot and spooge out, new cap, no issues...
yeah that’s normal when it gets too hot, too much pressure will force coolant past the cap.
Also if you're not building enough pressure, you'll have air pockets which will lead to overheating.

Appreciate all the helpful information. Just drained radiator, replaced with new coolant, and a new cap. Now I just need to load my trailer and find a hill!

Loaded trailer and up a small hill but very similar to the one it overheated on. Nothing! Temp gauge didn't even move a little! Will need to try it on a warmer day with a longer hill to see for sure, but so far so good. Thanks for all the information and help. Very appreciated!
On mine, when it starts going up, just keeps climing until it's pegged, and the coolant is boiling out, it's hot. I think it's working fine but could be wrong.

Good to hear!! Funny how an old radiator cap can just hit it's limits and mess things up.
