I'd overhaul the cooling system and slap a new thermostat and water pump in it. I'd also pull out the radiator and have a radiator shop clean it and check it for leaks. Check the fan clutch by seeing how freely it spins after a drive. If it spins too freely, replace it, if there's some resistance, it may still be good. Backflush the heater cores as well.
Be sure to use a Motorcraft Thermostat AND radiator cap, Murray seems to hold up, but anything beyond that is very risky.
One more thing, I mostly use this for towing my car trailer and the over heating has never happened before. It was all of the sudden, with the trailer loaded and going up a fairly steep hill that it got hot. Not sure if that matters or not.
that means something failed that was working properly before. Or you have a new blockage in the cooling stack that’s preventing air from flowing through the way it should.
What have you actually tested so far?
Actually just getting started. Removed the overflow tank and drained the radiator. Something I remembered was that as soon as I added / topped off the reservoir the overheating happened. Is it possible that the cap on the reservoir not fitting tight enough could cause the problem?

Absolutely it will, my Sno-cat, never had an issue, it would get warm towing the tracked trailer/500 gal propane tank in heavy snow and up the mtns, but never hot, all of a sudden, in light snow, same mtn she got hot, checked coolant, she spewed a little, weird, next day, same thing, I was like wtf... stopped at Napa on way up following week and bought a new rad. cap, been fine ever since. Same issue with my 66 F100, if your cap isn't holding 13 or 16psi (those seem to be the common IME) you're not getting the full benefit of the pressure building in the cooling system.
