Finally decided on a engine

After much research and thinking I have committed to using a 4.6 with a 5 speed manual in our upcoming 1954 Panel project.

I originally had my heart set on a coyote but after much research and reconsidering what I want to accomplish with the swap which the #1 is reliability and the ability to get a repair if needed
from about any shop using off the shelf parts. I also wanted fuel injection. I also had someone recently gift me a crown vic with 100K miles on it. I plan on tearing it down and at least put timing chains and check the bearing clearances.

I am keeping the straight axle and the truck already has a Toyota Power steering setup.

I did some searches and did not really find much about doing this swap in a 53-56 with a stock frame

GOOD LUCK with that electronic engine set-up and the ORIGINAL terrible front suspension and terrible drum brakes and dana 44 rear ---does not sound like a SAFE build to me---

It does have a front power disk brake conversion and a aftermarket front lowering spring.

I do not think the engine electronics will be much of a challenge.

Undecided on the dana 44, those are very good differentials used for many years but I may end up putting a 9" in it depending on gear ratio availabity

Sounds like a plan to me. The 4.6 is a well engineered engine that's pretty much bulletproof and can easily go 200,000 miles without difficulty. It's hard to believe it's been around for 40 years already. Something you may or may not have considered is the automatic and manual cars use different ECU's, so if you're getting your drivetrain from a Crown Vic, you'll need to change computers to make it work with the 5 speed. It just adds another level of complexity to the project messing with wiring harnesses and electronics, in addition to having to invent the clutch linkage, etc. The full drivetrain from the CV would be much simpler to setup since you'll have it all right there. Sure, banging the gears is fun, but there's also something to be said for slipping it into drive and goin' cruzin'. Just a thought.

As for the engine swap, the 4.6 would be no different than anything else, it's just a matter of setting it up. I'm sure there's got to be premade mounts that you can fit to the stock chassis, no different than the 302 or any cheb engine. But even if there's not, it wouldn't be that hard to fab up a couple of brackets and utilize the CV parts. Be sure to keep up a build thread, I'll be wanting to watch this.

Yes a auto would greatly simplify things and could possibly end up with a auto trans.

I am hoping to use HP tuner to make the ecu happy with the manual
