that is scarry to use a foot pound torque wrench. most of them don't even go down to 10 foot pounds.
in my world (helicopter mechanic) we only use the middle 1/3 to 1/2 of the range of a torque wrench and they are certified for calibration every year.
Wish I didn’t use the old torque wrench. At less than 10 ftlb snapped off the upper injector hold down bolt. Now I’m trying to remove it but it is so deep I ordered a different extractor set.might be a dril and retap scenario.
this sucks…..
might need to order a inch torque wrench…
Update: After a rough couple weeks... My pup got diagnosed with Cancer. Then my favorite aunt just passed.
I got back on the Truck.
I ended up doing a pressure test on the coolant system and it passed. 15# for 2 hours.
I replaced all the injector seals except #2. Truck idled and revved up better. But, was a lot of smoke. So, I drove it. It started to produce white smoke.. ERRR.
Came back home and parked it overnight. Next day. Wouldn't barely turn over. Hydrolocked. So, I pulled #2 glow plug and it was oil soaked. Removed the injector.
I pressure tested the coolant system and it failed. I replaced the injector cup on 2. Put in the newly resealed injector. I'm waiting the 24 hours to see how it goes.
Wish me luck. A little might go a long way. And be much appreciated.
If this doesn't run amazing. I'm throwing int the shop rag and taking it in to get looked at.
So, after the 24 hours it started up. Smoked as expected. Ran fairly smooth. I drove it 10 miles and the smoking has almost completely cleared up. Think a little residual oil/coolant in the exhaust system. Anyways. It was warmed up and still long crank to start. So, I dropped it off at the shop to figure it out.
Pulling the cab wasn't too bad... That said I lubricated the cab bolts for a few days with a variety of stuff. I disconnected the trans linkage so it would lift enough on the drivers side. That was the side that was just about 1/4" too far forward to get the uppipe installed. Other than that nothing really was binding. I have Marty's diesel fuel system so I had plenty of fuel line.
I ended up replacing the body mounts anyways while I was there. New bolts etc.
The trans linkage holder snapped on me. That plastic piece I couldn't find a replacement. So, I reused it and taped it.
Other than that; I used a floor jack to lift each side. Only needed to do the drivers; but, I replaced the pucks and bolts for the body mounts. Also, allowed me a little extra room to add POR15 on the frame rails.
Might have been the injector seals. They were really bad. But, won't know for sure until I hear back from the shop. Been there 2 weeks now. So, I'm a little impatient as it looks like they haven't even looked at it... My gauge broke that I was using to determine compression test. So... I was going to test it after the new seals and the new injector cup; but, unfortunately it died. Went over 1000psi on the cranking to determine the pressure. I doubt it went up that much... But, something still isn't correct as it should fire right up. I might have them do the oil cooler while it is there. Depends on the cost. I've done it. Not too bad.. Just running out of time with what this season is doing to us. Just lost an uncle a couple weeks ago and the aunt is now been given weeks to live due to cancer. This year has the hits coming in fast... Anyways. Thanks for the advice. And when I get the buggar back; I'll update the post on the results.
Interesting thread. I'm having cold start issues after resealing my injectors and wonder if that's part of my problem. Hope you get this figured out soon!
Haven't got the truck back. Tech drove it and said it ran great, no issues. I asked if he was having any kind crank issues to start. Reply was it is normal for having bigger injectors. I asked to have them do a compression test but they said it wasn't needed.
I'll wait to get it back and see how it is running.
I'll order another gauge most likely and do another compression test.
