Clunk in drivetrain

This has been going on for a few thousand miles and I need to address it. I get a hard clunk or jolt in the drivetrain when I let of the accelerator at highway speed.

I also feel in the 1-2 shifts

My guess is a broken motor mount letting the engine and trans shift but it seems our motor mounts are bulletproof.

What else should I be looking for? Drive shaft u joints? (I've changed them at least once in 230k miles).

Y'all rock!

Could also be excessive backlash in the ring and pinion.

Check your carrier bearing if it’s a two piece rear driveline

ok will check the carrier bearing and pinion. Both of those have less than 40k miles so I ruled then out in my head.

I had to change the entire rear axle years back and the carrier was changed with the transmission.

Will report back.

One thing I forgot to mention is that also does that jolt when I come to a stop. Unless its a very very slow, creeping stop.

Checked my notes and the carrier bearing has 40k miles on it as does the replacement rear axle.

Carrier bearing rubber looks ok. Slight bleeding from rear of the bearing.

I put the truck in neutral and used a 3 foot pry bar...really couldn't get much movement out of the shaft at the pumpkin for whatever that's worth.

The 3 driveshaft u-joints MAY be original! GULP. Will take care of all 3 in May.

Perhaps one is sticking and forcing the carrier bearing to shift around?

Very crusty underneath. Are you in the "rust belt"?
Man, they know how to ruin vehicles up north and keep the manufacturers in business.

Check to see if the pinion nut has come loose. Common issue.

Was the replacement axle fully rebuilt before installation?

Will check it when I drop the drive shafts to change the u joints! Thanks for the idea!

Yes it was a fully rebuilt rear axle with new parking shoes on it.

To me it feels like the engine is is shifting around...but hey...I'm dumb as a brick.
