I just bought a used 92 and thought I heard some rear wheel bearing noise but the shop put it up and now says the noise , hum is coming from the rear differential but they dont work on that .
What type of things could this be and what type of costs might be involved ?
This has the 3.0 and 166 k miles on it .
btw great forum and have been reading alot of stuff here .
If you are hearing a whirring, humming noise when coasting (backing off gas pedal at speed on level road) either worn pinion bearings or a worn differential cross shaft is likely. At your current mileage, neither should be worn to an appreciable degree unless the previous owner severely neglected the differential. There is an outside chance the noise may be due to a loose pinion nut, so I would check that first. Cost to replace just the pinion bearings is around $80 for a kit to do it yourself while a loaded differential case runs approximately $295.00.

Left scroll bar to 'differentials/repair kits' (something along those lines), then on the link to Dana 28 and scroll to near the bottom.
I see the price has gone up slightly since I rebuilt mine. I've been please with their products and service.
Ok so I found a mechanic that will put in a used rear end that I find for 250.00 . If you could pick any rear end what would you put in or would you stick with the stock Dana rear end?
If the stock one , what years can I go up to . Could I also take the rear end from a Bronco II or Ranger and up to what years?
I had that same problem a few months back and I was told that it was a U-joint. A U-joint will definitely make a whirring sound after deceleration from high speeds. But that was only part of my problem. The Transfer Case was also another problem. The gears and the chain as well as the bearing inside the TC went bad causing all sorts of noise. So I had all the U-joints replaced and the transfer case rebuilt all for less than a thousand. The AWD's have 6 U-joints I beleive. Hope this helps.
