Rear differential squealing...

My rear differential has been making noise off and on for the last few months. More "off" than "on" with the noise mostly occurring at very low speeds, often when braking. I thought it was worn brake pads: replaced those yesterday (they needed replacing), and was very surprised to hear the noise again today. I noticed that the rear differential is slightly warm to touch towards the front where it connects to the drive shaft.
I suspect that I've a bad pinion bearing. Anyone replaced these?
TIA for relevant wisdom and insight.

Have you taken a look at the oil in it? Are there obvious metal flakes? That's where I would start. And there should be a magnet around there somewhere. Either on the drain plug or the fill plug. I'd look there first. Other than that I'm watching to learn.

The drain plug has the magnet on it (on my 2002 at least, but i believe they are the same), when mine went it looked like it was covered in the silver anti-seize. I paid a shop to do mine, there are two things i don't feel comfortable trying to attempt, that is differentials and auto transmissions, but that is just a personal thing for me, seems like there is a lot you can tear up quickly if you don't know what your doing!
