Hi, fairly new here I just made an account after years of using others post on this for to work on my truck. Anyways, Ive been having some bad milage issues with my 88 f150 4.9 getting around 5 mpg and I've replaced just about everything ignition related aside from the injectors and although I'm not ruling them out, in looking around for solutions I found out apparently the capacitors go bad in the ECMs for these trucks so I figured id crack mine open and see. Looks like it has some corrosion for some components and the capacitors so I figured I'd just swap it out or get them repaired now. ECM number is E8TF-12A650-Y2B and I found only one thats remotely close on rock auto with one of the interchangeable numbers of: E8TF12A650YB I can find the full number E8TF-12A650-Y2B on other websites but rock auto is almost half the cost so I'd rather use them if possible. Was wondering if the 2 in my number is interchangeable with the one I found from rock auto or if I should just spend the money for one elsewhere. Also was wondering if theres a general consensus here on a decent place I could send it to get fixed or just buy one.
Thanks.
I’m surprised it even runs! I ordered mine from flagship1. It’s an online place if you haven’t checked them out. I’m not sure about your compatibility question, sorry!
You might not have a lot to lose by replacing the three blue capacitors yourself.
Here's the thread where I replaced mine, and a diagram of the capacitors. The arrows represent the orientation of the negative leg of the capacitors. The negative leg will be shorter than the positive, and the side of the capacitor will be marked with a line.
I bought a spare computer from Module Mechanics in Colorado, but I've never tested it in the truck. I bought from there based on reviews and forum post recommendations. All of the available ECMs are reconditioned, so it's somewhat of a crap shoot
Just an observation. Those capacitors appear to have been replaced before. That "corrosion" looks like someone used inappropriate flux during replacement and then didn't wash it off. Easy enough to check if this is the case. Just look at the solder joints. They would be less than perfect.

I checked on flagship1 after you mentioned it looks like they have two different options with and without the 2 for the number so I'm going to assume it does make a difference. How long have you had your ECM from them? Any Issues?

Good to know. I'll have to check then maybe it doesnt need replaced at all. Thanks

I had it for 2 years give or take before I converted to a custom ECU. No issues from it though.
