O have a 2002 Ford 7.3 2wd my tires started cuping about 10k miles ago can'tdrive over 70mph or my fillings will pop out . Went to get them road force balanced and the shop told me they wouldn't do it suggested i get new shocks. I have Rancho 9000xl adjustable shock i installed about 40k miles ago, is that typical life span for Ranchos ? Any good recommendations for replacement shocks?
I'd start with the easy stuff first before replacing the suspension.
Rotate, balance, alignment.
Tire pressure.
Check for play at the ball joints.
Some tires just suck. In my personal experience, Micky Thompson and Dick Cepek tires sucked from day one. Loud. Early cupping. Uneven wear. That's not to say they all do but mine did. I couldn't get rid of them quick enough. I knew my suspension and steering components were good. Never had any luck with BFG's either but I know plenty that run them just fine.
You didn't mention what brand and size tires, or stock rims, or if you had spacers.
I've never had any rancho products but one would think you'd get more than 40k on a set of shocks.

I have Cosmo Mudkickers 12ply 305/55r20. I know they're not the best but rode good for the first year got them Nov 2024 with a slight louder humming than i was use to, just figured it was due to being 12ply tire and more aggressive tread pattern. I rotate and balance them every oil change at 5k miles. Thats why I'm thinking my shocks my be the reason theyre cupping. The Excursion rides smooth under 70mph and doesnt bottom out but will ride like a boat on a wavy stretch of road. Forgot to mention I installed F350 coil springs up front since my old ones were worn out, front end completely rebuilt about 2yrs ago, bushings bearing ls ball joints.
These things eat shocks, especially if you have weak springs and no/worn bumpstops. I ate through a set of Bilsteins in about 25k.Do not count out the shocks. They are the primary cause of cupping.
Mud tries are bad about cupping. Soft and chunky tires will cup, just a matter of when.
Shocks with proper re-bound help. Tuning required and lots of time. Agree with the above on that, they are important. Tight suspension and aligned will also help.
However, once you start cupping rotate the tires to the other end and it may help. But, once you get cupping started it will continue unless you shave the tire round again.

Luckily I found a shop about an hour and a half from me that shaves tires. Im going to take it in next week and have the tires shaved and replace the shocks then take from there.
Everything on the front end was replaced 2 years ago, alignment is a year old. She drives staright, drives smooth for the most part except when I get above 70mph
