Hypothetical question

Not looking for opinions on whether to "lose weight" or not to, I've just been wondering something. Im sure the day will come when it happens, the only thing im not fond of is the strong exhaust smell. Older diesels had DOC's but no other type of emissions in the exhaust. A DOC does tame down the smell some from what I can tell. If one were to perform a weight loss could they still run a DOC? They don't require regens and are a passive device like a catalytic converter. Again, I'm not looking to get roasted or ridiculed, just curious what you think. I already know how I could make this happen if I can determine it would be safe.

Interesting idea. Only thing I can think of that might get complicated is dealing with soot. Even though the MY23+ have a 9th injector downstream of the DOC & SCR they still do the occasional type 2 regen that adds fuel to the exhaust stroke to burn soot from the DOC & SCR. So no matter the model year you can’t totally eliminate regens.

That's interesting that they still regen like the prior year trucks even with a 9th injector.

Wouldn't the tune remove the 9th injector activation cycle???

Or what if the the injector was replaced with a pipe that put it back into the tank...

Yes it would. I just didn't know the '23 and newer trucks did that since they had a 9th injector. I just want to run a DOC only on a weight loss tune.

Sorry, my only point was the DOC and SCR plug up with soot. This is described in the 23+ coffee table book and managed using this type 2 regen. The pre-23’s not having a 9th injector basically always do a type 2 regen, automatically taking care of any soot that collects in the DOC and SCR every regen. If you delete but leave the DOC I assume it will eventually plug up unless you figure out how to do the occasional regen. Maybe it’s as simple as doing a manual regen every 1500 miles or something. Unfortunately the coffee table book fails to mention how often a type 2 regen is required or what triggers it. I watch EGT11 on my 24 during regens looking for abnormally high temps, a clue a type 2 is in progress. Still watching and trying to figure it out.

Strong exhaust smell???
Mine doesn't have that, maybe it's in the tuning.

I would agree with the above statement as I quite enjoy the smell, my wife however feels that the exhaust smells much more since the weight loss.

Sure doesn't smell as bad as a regen cycle.

I'm just basing the smell off other trucks I've been around. I had a 7.3 excursion and these newer trucks seem like they have a much stronger smell.

Question... what are you referring to when when using the acronym DOC and SCR ? Sorry I'm lost at the moment but usually in print things like this are referenced in full verbiage when first used and then acronymed afterwards !

Speaking of older diesels and smells as compared to todays diesels, remember you're not dealing with "1" the same engines and "2" not the same fuels !

This should explain, from the 23 coffee table book:
