Hey all... I have a front main bearing cap bolt that I believe has a casting flaw. As far as I know, it has been there for 57 years now. I just had the short block done and as I was bolting on the oil pump I noticed it...
A few questions:
The machinist that rebuilt it says it shouldn't be a problem. I think he should have noticed it and replaced it.
Does this seem like an issue? Now is the time to replace it if I have to!
Is this just a standard grade 8 bolt that I could find at Ace Hardware?
I have been told by my neighbor that the markings are different and maybe something special about it. He's a machinist, but he's 90 year old.
Any info would be much appreciated!
That being a main cap I would replace it. These bolts are special in they way the shaft and face are. ARP is what a lot go with. But just needing one I would go by a wrecking yard or a place that builds engine and they should have some laying around.
It was easy to find... I just didn't want to lose two days of assembly because I saw it on Friday evening at 5:55 pm. Yesterday afternoon I scored one from a helpful lady at Motion Auto parts whose brother went out to her shop and took one off an old engine. All good!
with how old these motors are today i never reuse main, rod. head, damper or flywheel anymore, may cost 100 more to build but peace of mind always seems to win
