Find this. You need to pull it out when you go to set timing with a timing light. Once set, put it back in. IT ONLY NEEDS TO BE REMOVED WHEN USING THE TIMING LIGHT!

what year truck it matters, your spout connector will be close to the distributor, on 93 and older 302, 351w, or by the hood hinge on driver side 94 and newer like picture that 90project5.0 put up, Ford 302 (non-HO) uses a 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8(87-93), 302 HO uses 351w firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8(94-96)

Thank you I didn't know. but I did not use a timing light, couldn't find one.so i just used all the info you guys gave me. and it worked
Only problem I had was getting the #1 spark plug back in. 20 minutes. I looked at the old dist and made marks i had put on the old dist and put on new one.
I now have to get it tuned better, with the timing light. Thanks for your help

The truck does not back fire at any time , starts pretty good.
The only thing I don't know about now is . When it starts it runs pretty fast, then it calms down a little but really jumps in gear. My problem is I can't get it to slow down . I tried to adjust the adjustment screw. No change ,except to get fasterI have not gotten my timig light yet. I am hopeing that will correct the problem. Is there anything i can do.
Does the throttle position senser have anything to do with the speed of engine? I am really close to being on the road soon. LOL
I do not get any codes from the eec. Yhe engin check light does not come on, I have tried all spots to put the paper clip. I know the light is not burned out because it coms on when i turn the key on.

Timing light needs to be the next thing before looking at anything else! TPS tells the motor how much the throttle blades are open so the computer knows how to do the fuel trim, basically. There’s a lot more involved, but that’s the basics.

Watch this video.

I need someone to tell me the size of bolt is holding the crankshaft pully on. I need to turn the pully to tdc. If anyone wants to take the time to tell me exactly the procedure for getting everything where it should be. I have been working on it for 2 days I don't know where i am.. I have changed the distributer in and out 4 times. I have it all screwed up now, it won't hit at all. It has killed 2 new batteries from me trying to start it. I have a timing light ,but I can't use it, I hAVE A PACEMAKER. I have someone that can use it for me.

What the hell you driving?
It should be a 15/16" bolt head on a 5/8-18 thread bolt if it's a old Ford V8

Timing light can mess with your pacemaker?!
Pull the number 1 plug and spin until you get the compression stroke (pushes finger away from air), look at crank timing marks And turn it whatever way is closest to get it to “0” timing mark. Put the cap on the distro and mark on the housing where the number 1 point is and remove cap again. Stab the distributor however you want as long as the rotor button is facing your marking you made when it’s fully. Tighten the clamp to where you can barely turn the distro by hand. Run your plug wires in order. If everything works, she will fire up. If it starts, pull the spout connector, put the timing light on number 1 and set to 10 degrees btdc. Put spout connector back in when done.

If everything is working and you follow those steps like I said, she will run.
