While it's true fuel pumps aren't as good as they used to be, neither are any of the imported parts we're forced to use. don't pay any attention the internet babble saying they are total junk. I use Carter mechanical pumps on my old rigs as well as a fleet of older trucks just used for harvest season. I have no more problems with the fuel pumps than anything else.

i have had good luck with a simple, small electric click-clack pump mounted down on the frame rail under the cab , and just blocked off the original.

I've always preferred Carter or Airtex fuel pumps, if either company really still make their own.
My truck has a Carter and the fuel pressure is right on the money.

In the last year I have replaced 2 bad mechanical fuel pumps. My initial lasted about 10 years. I then had a brand new one fail on me within 2 weeks. I ended up installing a Holley Red electric pump and made an entire wiring harness with a low oil pressure cutoff switch with a fail-safe bypass for that (just in case it goes bad) and relay for the pump. Works great, only complaint is the noise, it runs a little on the loud side. But everything about the truck is loud so while driving you barley notice it.

X2 get a Carter or Motorcraft (if you can find one $$) mechanical fuel pump (meaning not the cheapest one off the parts house shelf), put it in and go.

Part Numbers: Look for D8TZ-9350-B or D8TZ-9530-B for 1978-1979 F-Series 4WD and Broncos.

I hope those who are running electric fuel pumps wire them thru an oil pressure switch or some other type of safety devise so they shut off it the engine stalls and the ignition key is still in the run position.

I had a 1970 Torino GT years back. It was vermillion red with a laser stripe, 351 4V and Ford's lousy cruise-o-matic trans.
I will never understand why it didn't come with a C6. What a lousy way to save a buck.
My dad bought a new 1972 Ranchero with a 351 4V and it came with a C6.

I still have one from NAPA that put on in the early 2000s, but it "knocks" at lowest idle, It might be the outer ring of the eccentric but I read some pump arms will do it. I bought a new Carter mechanical a couple years ago on a sale, still in sealed air proof bag in the box, might need it one day.

I also have a "not expensive" electric pump I intend to set up for emergency insertion/use back near the tank, and intend to rig a bypass route around the mechanical pump up near the engine. My FPR will keep pressure right.
