I have a block heater that goes in through one of the freezer plugs, it came on the truck already. It has a couple times now when the pressure builds in the coolant system started streaming coolant. I live in Montana thing I might just switch to one that I put on the oil pan instead and put a freeze plug back in.
Sounds like a plan. They also make them that insert in the lower radiator hose, and another type that go into the heater core loop. You can usually get those at tractor supply.
The block heater (water) and the pan heater (oil) are 2 different things.
What is it you are looking to do with this heater? Faster starts and heat in the cab faster or the oil to move throughout the motor faster?
When you heat the block you are also heating the heads so the motor should start faster, gas or diesel.
Because the motor is warmer to start with you should get heat in the cab faster too.
My GM 6.2 diesel I bought new came with a block heater from the factory. Oil delivery trucks I drove up north used block heaters and even then you had to give them a shot of starting fluid, it was damn cold!
I was in charge of 2 large Cat diesel generators at a hospital that had 2 block heaters each and I can tell even if 1 failed it would not start and why it was on the list of things to check when doing rounds.

I had one of those lower rad hose heaters + a little electric battery blanket when I was stationed in Fairbanks, AK. Good to go @ -40. Helps if you nose it into a snow bank. A layer of snow can trap heat and insulate the engine compartment.

Fun Fact, -40 is the exactly the same F or C.
I watch a guy in Sweden, they all pile snow up against their houses during the winter for insulation.
