Help Boost Problems

I have a 99 Powerstroke. At a slow takeoff, when my boost gauge reaches about 5lbs I hear a loud hissing noise and my gauge drops to zero.A power loss is noticed. If I lean into the throttle the noise will go away and my gauge will go back to normal. Also at cruising speed if I let off the throttle and ease into it a little bit the noise will start again until I get to a certain point. It seems worse when its cold and somtimes it goes away after it is driven awhile.Any input would help.

It is your exhaust backpressure valve. It is there to help warm up the engine faster by closing a valve in the exhaust to create back pressure nothing to worry about but i have known people who gut it out so it dosnt work or you also can turn it into an air brake or so called Jake brake. Hope that helps

Removal of the EBP valve is not recommended as it also has a vital role in emmissions control . It also helps control turbo speed, if removed it culd void the warranty. Under light speeds, loads and when the engine or IAT sensor reads cold the EBP valve will close off reducing turbo speed and hence boost. So if you start to get on the throttle and the problem goes away it sounds like it is functioning properly. However, the loud hissing sound does concern me, you may have an exh leak prior to the turbine (exh man , babys butt )

I should say everything has a vital role in emissions control. Your backpressure directly influences turbo speed and hence boost. Along with intake restricions , exh temps, cylinder pressure even combustion timing (not DIT) Your EBP has been carefully mapped out to give desired results (meeting emissions standards) as well as the best performance. This holds especially true for diesels equipped with EGR as the EBP is increased to get higher rated of recirculation.

Mine does the exact same thing!!!! It drives me crazy in the mornings. The sound is probably louder because of my 4 exhaust.

I'm not sure if the SuperDuties are set up the same way as the pre-'99 models, but we can disconnect the EBPV from operation by disconnecting the two wire harness at the base of the turbo. This will render it inoperative. When I did that, it didn't make any difference in how long the truck takes to warm up.
