Replacement side mirror glass

I want to get replacement glass for my side mirrors as they match the aged look of the truck as opposed to the fresh chrome ones I have on there now. I went to a local glass store and they said special automotive mirror glass has to be used.

I have searched online to get replacements made. Due to the age there is not standard replacement. Any suggestions on where I can send them out to get replaced.

FYI - Those mirrors are not factory original. I wouldn't go crazy trying to "repair" the heads. Don't like the chrome? Paint and distress accordingly.

Look at these:

I have new chrome mirrors with the original mounts in place. I was trying to avoid having to weather them. The trick is getting the rust to bleed into the paint as well as create that speckled pitted rust pop through the paint look as opposed to just patches of rust. The cream colored paint should be easy to duplicate.

I think the mirrors I bought might be stainless steel...D'oh! So I would need to get some steel ones to get them to weather.

if I can find a glass place that is definitely the preference but if not good idea on weathering a set.

Nope. They said outside auto mirror glass was special and they don't keep it in inventory or cut it.

I had mirrors replaced by the shop foreman at Safelite twice. Once many years ago for stock mirrors for my '54 and again in 2018 for stock mirrors for my 55. Last year I went back with some other mirrors I want to sell but there's a new foreman and he said corporate doesn't allow them to do it anymore. So I went to a locally owned glass and mirror shop, not an auto glass shop. The old guy said he would do it but it wasn't cheap.

What kind of glass store did you go to? Yes, auto mirror glass is different from bathroom mirror glass. That said, any good automotive glass store should be able to help you with the correct automotive mirror glass. All it takes is someone willing to cut the size and shape and install it like any other glass. It shouldn't be that difficult. Keep trying different shops until you find a good one is about all I can suggest.

Just make a template and have a glass shop cut you a piece of mirror/glass. Then install yourself

Will any mirror work. My local glass shop was pretty adamant it had to be a certain type of glass and mirror. Maybe it is thicker and more shatter resistant?

I can try a different glass shop.

Auto mirror glass may be tougher to withstand vibration and shock better than standard household mirror, I really don't know the engineering aspect of it. The big difference I know about auto mirror is the silver coating is on the outside instead of the backside like a household or bathroom mirror glass. The coating is hard and doesn't refract light and reflections the same. You can tell the difference by holding something against the glass, like a card. Auto glass has no gap in the reflection, your bathroom mirror will show a gap between the object and the reflection, which is the thickness of the glass between the outside and the silver coating behind.

Auto mirrors have a film or something to keep the glass intact upon breakage similar to the widows in a vehicle. This prevents them from becoming flying chunks of razor blades in an accident.
Im not sure if cutting them is any different than cutting normal glass/mirrors.

Did you mention the size of the mirror you needed? Might find something on here..Or something big enough that it could be cut to fit yours

Yes as stated above just pretend your'e in a government office and keeping asking the same question to different people until you get the answer you need to hear!

I would also suspect that bathroom mirror glass would blind someone with a lot of glare very easily reflecting the slightest amount of head light illumination. Not a bad idea actually, but probably illegal.

I haven't posted for a long time but felt like jumping in asthis discussion brought back memorie!. I'm retired now but did auto glass for 40 years or so. The mirror glass for automotive is mirrored on both sides which somehow cuts down on the glare and reflection from following vehicles headlights. We used normal 1/8" mirror for replacements in the 70's and 80's, before we had access to the automotive type. It worked but the silvering would start coming off the back. A real auto glass shop should be able to get and cut a piece of the automotive mirror.

John.
