I’ve been having a strange speedometer problem on my 86. After about 65mph the speed goes up much fast than your actual speed. It is accurate until then according to gps. But 70 mph reads as 80mph and so on. Any good fixes? Thanks!
Was anything done before this happened? Cluster pulled to replace bulbs maybe? Paint the needles?
If I had to guess it would be a gummed up cable or the needle bearing on the gauge it's self.
I think more the needle bearing at the gauge.
IIRC there is a magnet that passes a magnet on the needle that pulls the needle till it goes to far and it drops back down.
Because the needle does not have time to get back to zero before the magnet comes by it pulls it back up and starts all over again.
Now why it would read faster after 70 is beyond me

Great Info!
To my knowledge this cluster has never been out of the truck.
Is there any way I can safely rebuild it? Or even gain access to this needle bearing to grease it? I can't find any parts or any sources for a rebuilder.
When you take it apart if you have a auto be vary careful of the string for the gear selector needle.
I think once you get the gauge cluster out and take it apart you will see how the speedo needle works.
It will also be a good time to replace all the bulbs.
