Bronco headlight switch

Having issue with headlight switch on my 96 Ford bronco. Running lights and parking lights work fine with the switch pulled halfway out but after I pull the switch all the way out to put headlights on dash lights go out. In order to put the dash lights on I have to finagle the switch at the halfway point, but when the dash lights go on headlights go out. Just installed a brand new NAPA switch. Fuse number four which is a 15 amp is good I just replaced. Would possibly can be the issue? Thanks.

What did the pigtail the new switch plugged into look like? I had one melt around some of the pins once.

Headlight pigtail connector looked fine, a bit yellowish but no burn marks.
Installed new NAPA headlight switch connector and still same issue.

If you've replaced the headlight switch and the connector and the functionality didn't change, the next thing I'd be wondering about is the radio. Does your Bronco have an aftermarket radio head unit? Does it behave strangely when lights are turned on?

No radio as of now, all have been removed/ disconnected.

I am thinking fuse panel under steering wheel where #4 is located might be the issue. After manipulating fuse 4 dash lights would flicker on and off, however the actual metal jaws that hold fuse have pushed back out of actual panel being so brittle. I plan to pull both wires out of panel back and run a remote fuse, see what happens.

While fixing that loose connection for fuse 4 would be a good idea, there's really no tie between the load of the headlights, the dash lights, and fuse 4 according to the factory wiring diagram. So the dash lights effecting the function of the parking lights or the headlights should not be a thing. If you take fuse 4 out, do the headlights and dash lights function properly? Does the instrument illumination dimmer function seem to work properly when rotating the headlight switch?

Headlamp switch has 4 power wires in
I'd check the 40 amp fuse in the underhood PDC for the main headlight power
That power goes into the switch Black with Orange in and Red with Yellow out of the switch
Below dash fuses 15 amp is for tail lights only 3 fuses for exterior lamps and the radio / courtesy lamps
Check the powers in and the powers out of the headlight switch all 4 spots, good chance the NAPA switch is NFG
Here is a headlight switch test for a 1993, your 1996 Bronco will be identical or real close

Pulled fuse panel and fuse 4 has no wire going into panel, tan white strip leads out to headlight switch. Do you know what color wire feeds fuse 4?

Fuse # 10 have no power in or out which controls dash lights. When I jump 12 volts to one side of fuse spot dash
lights illuminate and when I jump 12 v to other side ignition chimes go off. Checked back of panel and heavy blue wire with green strip enters bottom of fuse spot but I do not see a wire exiting. Where does blue wire with green strip go to dash gauges?

Oh, yep, you're right. I see in the diagram the circuit I was looking at only controls the dimmer function for the instrument illumination when the parking and headlights are selected. When Off, full battery voltage is provided to the instrument illumination. Sorry about that confusion.

Fuse 4 is fed by the same wire that also feeds fuses 8, 12, and 16. It's a Red with a White tracer that gets powered by Fuse 20 in the Engine Compartment Fuse Panel.

Fuse 10 provides mostly switch backlighting it appears.
