AIR CONDITIONER INTERMITTENT

I'm in south Florida. My AC has just started blowing about half cool and then for no apparent reason becomes normal. Controls all seem to be working. I was on the way to get some freon when it returned to normal so it don't seem like freon would help. I'm thinking some kind of switch or thermostat malfunction. 2014 150K miles. Anybody have any idea? OK I am a lot better informed now. Google was my friend and I learned about the frequent problems with blend door actuators. However, I have dual system. It seems that one side or the other should be failing. That is not my case, whatever happens happens to both sides. I also played around a bit and it seems that if it is malfunctioning a shut down and restart will correct the problem. Anybody????? TIA

The temp blend door actuators could be the problem. Unlikely they both failed at the same time but if you don’t have a passenger on a regular basis, perhaps the passenger side failed in the past and you didn’t notice.

Couple ways to check the actuators.
1) scan for codes. Be aware that they can fail and not set a code though.
2) use FORScan to monitor the actuator positions. The numbers should be stable, a graph view might show momentary spikes better than a pure numeric display. Move the temp full hot, the numbers/graph should move smoothly then stop when at full hot, repeat for full cold.
3) if you don’t have FORScan, the lower (drivers side) actuator is relatively easy to remove. Remove it then use your finger to turn the blend door (not the actuator) and see if the air temp changes.

I made a post on how to replace the lower actuator a couple weeks ago. See here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...placement.html

The passenger side actuator replacement requires tearing into the dash. I have not done it nor have I found a good video on how to do it.

Bob

Hi Bob Thank you. I think you nailed it. Today I was in 85 degrees and it got real wimpy. I could then feel a bit of difference between sides. Both were set the same and the passenger side felt cooler. Not a lot but enough to tell the difference. So, I plan to remove the driver side actuator and see if I can make it work manually. Thanks again.

Have you tried hitting the max ac button? It won’t do much for troubleshooting but it might get you cold air. If the actuator motor portion is working, it should drive the blend door to full cold.

Thanks all. Home now and corrected the problem with a can of freon from parts store. Been a month now and still cooling well.
