Overhauling my 292 Y-block in my 62’ F100 Unibody.
Pulled the crossover pipe and noticed the ECV is very biased towards the closed position. Shop manual says it should take very light pressure on the counter weight to open the valve against the spring pressure. Parts manual doesn’t even show it. Should I replace when I install the new exhaust system (I’m replacing all the pipes) or just go without.
Since you are in Michigan, if you drive a lot in the winter you might want to replace it or repair it. Keep in mind if that thing has been like that for a long period of time the crossover passages in your heads and manifold may be full of carbon and even a new heat riser valve won't make it work correctly. I've seen the crossover passages completely plugged up in high milage oil burners.
If you are looking for a drawing in the 1957-1963 Master Parts Catalog, it's Section 93 Page 639. If you have some other parts manual, it may not show it.
Those exhaust valves are getting a bit rare but may not be completely impossible to find.
C0TE-9A427-A - VALVE ASSY. - EXHAUST THERMOSTAT CONTROL - 292
Gary at NOS Parts Source in Olathe Kansas may have one. I sent him an email asking about it. I'll reply if he does have it.
Gary replied back 5 minutes ago that he is sold out of this exhaust control valve. Not seeing any others listed at this time. It's possible to either wire the valve open or remove the valve and braze the pivot holes shut using the remainder as a spacer to keep the exhaust as is.
Have a look at this one, on eBay. Not listed under the part number, but might be it. If that’s it, looks a whole bunch better than what you’re working with, and only 25 bucks.
