I'm in the market for a long block for my 2013 F450. Can anyone recommend a reputable engine retailer? I was looking at Choate and Jasper, but the reviews for both of them are not great. Talking to my local dealer it sounds like I could get a ford engine, but I was hopping to get something that already had upgraded valves, lifters, rocker arms and cp4 pump so I wouldn't have to replace those during the swap. Does anyone have other suggestions on where to look?
i'd go ford, factory warranty good at any ford dealer
That's my struggle. I want something durable and dependable (as opposed to suped up and overpowered). I want to do this job once and I want it last 200k+ miles. If Ford fits that bill, I'll go that direction. But if there are better options from third parties, I'm happy to pay more (within reason) for a better product. My reservation with ford at the moment is that my original engine only made it 170k before it dropped an exhaust valve into the cylinder. I was noticing that almost all of the third party engine providers tout that they use improved parts to address the known failures with this engine. I'm worried ford is still shipping the old design.

I would get a quote from both, I would imagine that youmay get some upgraded parts from Daves that would be worth it! Just my $.02
The Ford warranty doesn't address nor does it give you the opportunity to upgrade parts and fix common issues that have been found and fixed by the aftermarket. Couple that with rejected warranty claims, the large price difference at a dealership, and wait times to get into the dealer and you end up being a slave to that warranty. Ultimately do what gives you the best piece of mind, if I ever need a engine replaced it will be with a Monster from Dave and way overbuilt for my needs. Not to mention the devil in the details that smaller shop will be focused on vs the hourly workers trying to pump out as many units a shift as possible as long as they meet spec. Many Ford reman engines and transmissions are built by a contractor not at the Ford factory as one might think. Ford just handles the warranty.

Don't these pistons have a ceramic coating? If so I would be concerned about long term durability of the ceramic delaminating and scouring the cylinders

The 5.9L Cummins QSB came with coated pistons. And guys have been putting them in their rebuilds on 5.9L ISB's for quite some time. I'd guess this is a non issue.

They do... not sure on durability but it seems they are not the only ones with a piston crown coating...
Like mentioned, it seems there are Cummins pistons available with the same technology.
And about the SOA pistons, they have this technology as well.
It seems that this technology is a viable option for those who are willing to pay for this aftermarket option. I also understand this is not for everyone.
