Went under the truck today to do some more sleuthing. With wheels in the air, I noticed the steering was binding only when turning right, this afternoon, unlike yesterday when it was binding in both directions, so I thought wait...the damper compresses when turning right so I sprayed some lube on the steering damper/shock and the tone when turning right changed.
I took the damper off and the steering was smooth as butter!
The culprit...a totally seized up 10 year old damper.
Don't know why they don't come with bellows to protect the shaft from water. Ordered a KYB SS10309 from RockAuto.
Have you tried removing the drag link from the pitman arm to see if the problem persists? Then I noticed you made a thread about the steering shaft. Depending on what you find after removing the drag link(removing front axe from gearbox/ steering wheel), I would disconnect the steering rod and see what happens.
This will help pinpoint where the issue is...steering column, gearbox, front axle...
Yes I did do that when I tested the u joints but silly me I didnt think to turn the steering wheel with the drag link disconnected. Thanks for your thoughts INFRNL.
glad you got it figured out. I didn't even think about the steering damper until I saw your post in the steering shaft thread. how simple things can easily slip the mind

Crazy....I didn't expect the damper would seize up like it did. Usually they just stop dampening.
