Anyone know what this means to have the block heater element in the 7 o clock position?
The instructions indicate if not properly installed engine damage and block heater will fail.
I think my current block heater is not working
When I plugged it in ...in the past there was a little spark now there's no spark.
I don't have experience with a voltmeter so not sure what I'm aiming for in ohm's to test it out.
Attached are instructions for a block heater .
The heater is supposed to touch coolant and not metal
They are thinking that putting the heating element at the 7 O' clock position will allow it to not contact the cylinder walls
Just play with it, you will have to smash the heating element down some to install it wrong anyway
Easy to test one with an ohmmeter
One lead to each post in the ohms scale
Should be around 10-35 ohms
A shorted one will read zero ohms
You would also check both terminals resistance to engine / chassis ground, that resistance should be infinity

So the part of the element that curls upward would be pointing down, into the 7 o'clock position?
As shown in diagram ?
I think for any installation diagram, they will be either talking about the element or the plug-in connector face
Post the instructions
Just see how it fits in the hole
Verify no contact and install / tighten the bolt

Anyway to verify without all the fancy gadgets ?
I'm not an electrician or shop tech.
Can I go under the truck and feel the block to judge by feel ?
How warm should the engine block be after several hours of engine block usage ?
Yes, just plug it in and see if it gets hot
There is a resistance spec but if it doesn't heat up replace it
Same with diesel glow plugs, there is a resistance spec, but if one does not get hot, you replace it

Do you think I will lose a lot of coolant during the block heater swap ?
