I’ve never worked on a transmission so I figured I’d grab a core and do some learning. So that’s what I’m doing. My plan is to buy a basic rebuild kit and step through the process. I’ll document my steps in this thread.
The core is a PJD-E. I think it’s a 1970 T-bird unit from a 460.
Tear down is in progress. Started with output shaft.
Noted some damage on the rear seal that I’ll clean up when it goes back together.
Next I popped off the governor. Looks fine.
Drivers side. Took off band adjustment nut. Remove shifter nut.
Passenger side, Removed the servo.
Turned it around and removed the pump bolts.
Front side, removed vacuum modulator.
Removed the output shaft.
Flipped the unit over to work on the oil pan. Nothing bad seen in the pan.
Removed valve body.
Letting it drain now. Ran out of time so will pick it up later with pump removal.

You're a brave man my friend. I have thought many times about learning how to do this, but then I figure that I need a transmission rebuild about once every decade. Anything I learned will be long forgotten so each rebuild will be like doing it for the first time again. Best of luck and keep the thread updated.
