Have a '94 F150 (with E4OD) which locked up in Park. Manipulation and adjustment of shift cable unlocked it, but now part of the problem still remains. It will start in Park, but will not shift out of it. Turning the key to Run will allow trans to be shifted to Neutral and started, and everything's ok - unless or until it's shifted back into Park, where it stays. What should I look for, and where?
I took the steering wheel lock out and exmined it - nothing seemed to be wrong. Was in the process of taking the steering column shroud off to allow examination of ignition switch rod. Dash shroud was interfering, so in process of removing it, I removed fuse block panel. Found a fuse that protected, among other things, the electronic shift block. It was blown. New fuse (15 amp) solved problem - can now start in Park and shift normally. Whodathunk.
Sounds like the problem is the brake-shift-interlock circuit. If the shifter comes out of park in the first position after the ign.lock (ignition not powered up, but the steering wheel turns) then that is your problem.
I had the same problem. Carefully check your wiring harness at the rear of the truck with the taillights and trailer lights if you have them. My problem was a short in the trailer light harness that was killing the rear ABS/shift interlock - and blowing the fuse. Fixed the short and fixed the problem.
Checked the harness and found nothing wrong. Noticed leakage at pressure switch on master cylinder. This switch shuts off cruise control when brakes are applied. New switch was about $28 at a dealership (only source). Old switch was full of brake fluid, and all the plastic had melted, allowing metal contacts to short. Junk yard supplied new connector.
