Power Steering Pump Squeak

I thought the replacement of my harmonic balancer was going to fix the accessory squeak coming from the pulleys, it appears not and the offending unit seems to be coming from the power steering pump. When this happens is it a wheel issue or a unit issue? I see that new units don’t come with a wheel which leads me to believe there is no bearing on the wheel and the squeak is coming from within. I tried to isolate with a stethoscope but the engine is so noisy that’s difficult.
Also, without buying a shorter belt can you reroute the belt to avoid the power steering to double check?

Belt reroute won't work without a shorter belt I'm afraid.

Are you sure the sound is coming from the power steering pump and not the vac pump right above it? Same deal, needle bearing on the pump itself and not in the pulley.

The original vac pumps are known to have the bearing fail. Mine left me stranded in Colorado Springs when the bearing let go and finally seized up.

belt tension
worn pulley
worn belt
air in system
worn pump or pressure regulator

pulling the pulley off with a puller isnt bad to do and the new pumps do have some shaft play and is normal

Damn. Thanks. I might need to get a shorter belt then to really tell but it does sound like the PS. Do vacuum pumps flounder then fail all of the sudden or are there tell tale signs like brake pedal creeping to the floor when holding it down or anything else? I did a PS flush a couple years ago with Mercon, and I don’t really see signs of weeping fluid, groaning or anything else.

An inline filter is a good idea for these and yes I lean towards a vac pump making that noise. They fail at random

Seems like vac pump to me. But theyre right next to each other so hard to tell. Theyre easy enough to swap out. Mine failed at random. Driving down the road and I smelt something burning and the back had popped off and then it was squealing pretty bad.

Threw a dorman on and no issues in the past couple years. Tried to find MC but no luck.

Yeah it is difficult to hear, screw driver to ear or stethoscope… vac pump does seem like less of a PIA to swap though..

Drop the belt, 3 10m bolts i believe, and a hose and you're off to the races. Rachet wrench is your friend.

On order from Prosource Diesel, NAPA was a special order and would have cost more and taken longer, though theirs did come complete with the wheel. Shouldn’t be too much of a big deal though, I have many 3 jaw pullers.

A 3 jaw puller will work for removal of the pully, but don't press or hammer the pully back on to the new pump, as it will ruin the new pump. You need a pully tool that pulls the pully onto the new pump shaft.

Install studs for the vac pump makes it much easier for removal if it fails again, IIRC the 5.4 2v exhaust manifold bolts are the correct pitch and length if you decide to go that way

could it be done with wood blocks and a couple short bar clamps, I don’t have the unit in hand yet but wondering if I need to rent the tool if it’s available.

Yes that is the correct size for my 5.4 exhaust manifold to head studs.

Just heard video, I would suspect the pump now more.

https://magnefinefilters.com/ for the PS filter.
