You can't write this stuff. 2021 F350 King Ranch 4wd just ticked over 100k and the engine at least (besides one stupid DEF issue) hasn't skipped a beat until after letting it warm up the other day at 101,XXX miles right out of Powerstroke warranty I got in and it showed the code for "the powertrain control system has reached its cylinder number 7 adaptive limits". Had no choice but to drive it to work and it seems absolutely fine. Same power and everything as usual. I erased the code and drove it 100 miles on the interstate and it didn't throw the code the entire time. Then when stopping and letting it idle again for a short period of time the same code has returned and stayed again. Its due for an oil change but I highly doubt that's the issue. I always use quality fuel and a cetane booster so if it's an injector I might drive it to Detroit and give it back to Ford myself. Any ideas before I take it in to my dealer and waste a couple grand having them misdiagnose it 2 or 3 times before fixing the right thing?
If it were me I'd try running a strong dose of a fuel system cleaner, first. Something like Howe's Meaner Kleaner (or any other reputable fuel system cleaner/additive)
If you have access to the ForScan app, and an ODBII interface, I believe there's a setting to force a relearn for the PCM (which essentially clears the settings tables and allows them to be recalculated based upon follow-on operation). I haven't used ForScan in a while, but I know there's a function to perform a relearn on the TCM, just can't recall if there's one for the PCM. Perhaps any others that have more recently use of ForScan can chime in.
But, it does sound like it's injector related, to me. You might want double-check wiring near that cylinder's injector as a first step, then try some cleaner additive, and go from there...
Are you looking to repairing it yourself or do you just want some insight on what could be the problem prior to a trip to Ford or an aftermarket repair shop?
There are some troubleshooting methods using FORScan that may help to repair your truck.
