K Now remember I’m putting a 68 that has been in pieces for 20 years back together so I don’t remember if it worked before I started tearing it down. It doesn’t have door switches for the dome light nor a switch on the dash for cargo light. So my question is if I’m right you turn the dimmer all the way counter clockwise until it clicks and the dome light should come on. RIGHT??
well it’s not working so I moved to the light switch it should be the black/blue wire coming off the light switch goes directly to the dome light so I used my test light directly to the black/blue wire coming off the light switch nothing nada. So it there something else that should be feeding that thru the light switch everything else works except I noticed another interesting issue I pull the light switch out parking lights come on pull the light switch out headlights come on and the parking lights goes off is that the way it supposed to to work??
Please take a look at this wiring diagram at "https://www.fordification.com/tech/wiring/68-40.jpg".
Don't put down any money on my limited ability to read a wiring diagram but maybe this will help?
Rotating the light switch counter clockwise should turn on your dome light and the parking lights do go off when you activate the headlights.
Good luck to you.
Does the screws and clips that attach the dome light housing have a good ground, it's my understanding that the dome lights with a single wire get their ground from the screws and clips for the housing. Is your cab freshly painted? Just something to check.
Yes I’ve installed one of those LMC cargo lights with the third brake light built in and I’m running the same ground as the dome light and it works so I know ground is good now I’m thinking the lights switch is bad seeing how the parking lights goes off when headlights come on then the only problem is the light switch just to make sure that black/blue wire is good I’ll back feed it and see if the dome light comes on then I know it’s the light switch. Thanx.
I ended up taking the whole light switch because I could back feed the dome light and it came on. So bench tested the light switch and there is a tiny little micro switch built into the light switch that is the dome light. Did a continuity test and it was good so reinstalled the switch and plugged it back in and still no workie. Started testing and bingo pushed the green/yellow wire into the light switch and it came on I think the wires were pushing out when it was plugged in. So that is fixed.
with the cargo light and then the brake light on.
on to the next problem NO BACKUP LIGHTS so the fuse that goes to the backup lights has no power so I’m going to have to remove the fuse block and look at the back of it and see if something came lose.
