inline six

Anybody running a 240 or 300 six and a Volare ifs? What oil pan is required?

I’ve always wanted one with a 300 in it. Haven’t stumbled across any, though. I had a volare in a 56 back in the 90’s and it worked great with a 302. Not sure about I-6 oil pan for it or how the volare would do with the heavier engine.

What is the setup in your truck now?

I like inline sixes. I've never had a 300 but I had an Econoline truck with a 240 and I loved it. I've had several Chevies with sixes, old style and new.
My 56 panel was originally a six, which is long gone. I bought the panel about 30 years ago without engine & trans. I installed the Volare ifs then sold the panel. A friend kept it for 17 years, untouched, then sold it back to me about 8 years ago. I have a 500 Cadillac engine I once had in a '56 pickup and had planned to use it in the panel but it has been stored outside, under tarps and is now stuck. So I have located the '83 model 300 six and an '80 model AOD trans that I want to put in the panel. I just read on here, in another thread that 300s starting in 1980 have raer sump pans so that should not be a problem. Now I wil be researching how to hook up non-electronic AOD transmissions.

Sounds like a cool setup. The AOD is a bit finicky. You’ll need the right tv cable setup with the correct geometry on your carb linkage. I had one in my truck and liked it. Was just a bit of work to get everything right.

I read in a thread somewhere that the 240/300 six is a bit long for the engine compartment. It would require modifications to either the firewall and/or the radiator mounting. I have no personal knowledge if this is correct.

I'm not sure about the 53-56 trucks, but for the 48-52's it's too long without relocating the radiator ahead of the support and/or firewall mods.

It not likely longer than the 223 so no problem fitting in a 53-56, interference with an oil pan I can't say , the 223 has a rear sump but not a very deep one, the pan is fairly flat

From a Google search, AI summary;
“The Ford 300 (4.9L) inline-six is significantly longer than the older Ford 223 (3.7L) inline-six
due to its larger displacement, with the 223 measuring around 31.5 inches from crank pulley to block's rear, while the 300's larger bore and stroke make it a longer overall package, often requiring engine bay modifications for swaps due to its substantial length and torque focus.” Not sure why the stroke would affect the length. Maybe the pan depth.

Another post elsewhere puts the 300 at over 34”, but it didn’t say where the measurements were taken.

If it's only 2 1/2" difference in the length I'm sure it would still fit in there .

There is the option of an electric fan too. @Greg Rogers has one in his 56 I believe ..

300 6 will fit in a 53-56 F100,- had to cut the crossmember under trans and add a aftermarket tube type engine mount. It is not too long.

Here's some interesting information on building a 300-6, in case anyone is interested. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...formation.html

Agreed. I've seen Greg's truck and it is nice. Matter of fact I've driven it. He has done a great job. Looks even cooler pulling his vintage camper.

I got my 300 six today. It came from an '83, or '84 F100 with 82k miles. My next move is to go get an AOD trans that I have located. Then I will be gathering up the necessary parts to make it all work together.
