What is the best way to get to and replace speaker on my f100 truck with ac?
Get to? .... leave it. Replace? .... mount a new one on the hump or under the dash or hung from the ceiling .... or mount one in the door of choice ... or both.
Dash speaker....X2 leave it. Unless you might and that is a big might, be able to remove the cover (screwed on) and pull it out. But I bet not, and as far as getting to it from under the dash....with the dash still on...lol. A/C truck you see the speaker grill? Inbetween the defrost vents.
Heater/vent only truck.
Take it from someone who just pulled the dash and put it back in. You’ll be hard-pressed to get access to that speaker without at the very least undoing the top screws and leaning the dash forward far enough to wedge your hand in there and maybe a tiny screwdriver. I’d leave it and run some component speakers in the door.
I appreciate the great pictures and advice. I had to figure out ways to do one on my 66 vette with ac, 71 chevelle and 65 gto. In fact every car i restored was a challenge. In my 90 2500 chevy I can maneuver the plastic grilles and access from the top. That was the only easy one in about 30 restorations.
I don't like to add any unnecessary holes so ill figure out a way to hang one from underneath. Thank you all .
I replaced mine by removing screws on grille and going in from top. Can't recall as far as what I needed to access from below. I may have had speedo assembly and heater A/C control and or the A/C vents as I was doing other interior work at the time.
First off no one makes a 5x7 speaker for this location that drops in (at least not 5 years sgo) I bought closest 5x7. Had to enlarge the opening by cutting steel. This was not easy but Dremel and cut-off wheel helped. Then I had to reduce outer size of speaker to make fit. None of this carnage is visible when grille is reinstalled. It was a PIA project that I thought would be easy but am glad I did it.
I did new dash speakers in both my 77s. With dash removed, gauge cluster removed and radio removed, you can just barely get a new speaker mounted from underneath. Weirdly one speaker was a 3x5 and one was a 4x6. There are no 3x5 speakers on the market that have audio quality good enough to warrant this replacement. There are several dual cone 4x6s that make a good difference. Choose accordingly.
