Picking up a roller 351w out of a 98 e150 to drop into my 88 f150 this weekend. What kind of bolt ons would you all recommend looking to get 275-300hp for it, so far thinking a mild cam, heads, and intake. What all do you recommend?
Are you wanting that power to the wheels or just engine? Heads, cam, and intake can easily put you pushing closer to the 400 engine hp mark, depending on the parts that you choose. At that point you are looking at an aftermarket ECU unless you intend to go carb which comes with a completely different set of problems.
What is your budget? Do you want/ need to keep it within the SD computer limits or are you going to buy a new aftermarket computer or tuner?
Really dont want to put more than another $1k into the engine itself for now, was planning on keeping it SD for the time being. Am not against junkyard/marketplace heads and other parts, just not to familiar hat limitations on the SD side of the house. Looking for just 300 at the crank very mild build for sure
That isn’t going to get you very far. There was a recent 302 engine build thread and the Comp cam was almost $600 and that is without lifters. I just looked and the cam kit with lifters is approaching $900. You would still need to buy a gasket kit, fluids and other odds and ends. If you keep the stock roller cam and go with heads then you are probably looking at used which should be checked out first so that means whatever the machine shop will charge to go through them.
With a roller block, he may not have to get new lifters. Alternative to the cam would be 1.72 scorpion roller rockers. That only saves about $150ish. They were $420 when I bought them. Those would put him a little higher than the 512 cam with the F4 factory cam.

You might get away with reusing the lifters but no way I would take that chance with a new $600 camshaft. Longer rocker arms would be a good option with the stock cam. I used those rocker arms on the 302 with the 512 cam and GT40 heads. I found that the SD computer didn’t like that combination so I bought a FMS mass air kit. After that it ran great.
i don't know. I would not start this swap with a budget that low. Can it be done? Maybe, but what happens when you do have an issue? Front cover/coolant pump seized? Wouldn't you want to reseal the engine? Thermostat? Injectors?
Good luck, but I would take a good look at this mine field before I take the first step.
What was the original motor? Injectors may only be 14lb/hr which will definitely need to change if so. If 19s already, he could get away with an adjustable fpr to help dial in AFR some. I’m not saying it’s the best way, but possible.

E4OD in his information. Why does that matter?
I was under the impression it is a 1988 300-6 truck. I didn't realize they ran the E4OD behind them. Transmission type really only matters to people who like to consider everything in a build.
