Hey folks, looking for a little info since the full Banks exhaust system seems to be no longer available for my 2001 excursion with the 6.8 v10 4x4.
Banks still sells the headers and y-pipe for RV applications and I assume most v10 rv’s have the same transmission that the y pipe has to clear, so shouldn’t I be able to buy those parts to ditch my factory manifolds and then pick up a “from the cat-back” system to make it all work? My exhaust is so rusted out I’m pretty sure more comes out holes in the pipes and muffler than the actual end of the tailpipe lol.
Between that and the busted exhaust studs I’m in for a fun project. I didn’t want to tackle the studs until after I got the 3.5” lift kit installed. Which I should have done this week. That makes a little more space for working in there. The 3.5” kit netted me 5.5” of height up front the springs were so sacked out!
Just trying to piece this system together on an old machine. Hopefully someone has some experience/input.
Yeah, as far as know the RV frame up front is different from the EX front frame and I would expect fitment issues. It’s really a shame that Banks stopped making the headers for these wagons, they were the best header option.
The RVs would be E series based no? Probably a lot different.
E series for the class C RVs and F-53 frames on the class A motorhomes. I think the Banks RV headers are designed for the F-53 chassis, but a call to Banks would be in order if considering this.
I think that those are technically F-53 chassis, they leave the Ford factory as stripped chassis with the steering and control well forward of what a 550 would have, lots of common parts though with the heavier SD trucks.
it would be a lot safer to call Banks on the phone, and quit guessing.
Yeah, that’s a good point. I wish I had access to a motorhome to take some frame measurements. But I’ll give them a call when I revisit the project.
was crawling around under the rig last week and realized my exhaust had rotted out behind the cat too close to the fuel tank for comfort, so my header ideas got bumped back by the more pressing concern. So that funding went towards a Gibson stainless cat-back exhaust instead. Hopefully there’s enough good metal left at the cat to clamp to.
i did order a weld in y-pipe section to remove that weird restriction. I know its purpose was to remediate “exhaust flutter” or some weird resonance at a particular rpm, but I’d rather smooth that flow out, and deal with a little noise. Hopefully I don’t regret that decision.
I installed an SPD y-pipe which was also welded in when I had my muffler replaced, I personally picked up 2 mpg’s on my yearly trip to Florida this year and it seems to have more pep. I don’t think you will regret it.
