Starter Death sign, and 6.7 replacement
Starter Death sign, and 6.7 replacement
Greetings FTE,
This might be common knowledge for some guys but thought Id post so that maybe someone is thinking
about it when it happens to them so they can be ready.
Here's the details 1st and explanation down low.
IF YOU TURN THE KEY AND IT PAUSES, STARTER MIGHT BE ON ITS WAY OUT.
Now Im sure batterys, and ignition switch can be culprits, but if its doing that and then suddenly you have dash lights, and no crank?
well that might indicate it was the starter like in my case.
I banged on the thing to no avail, tried the jump trick from the plug on passenger side, checked the fuse, did the relay swap....
My app was showing that it was reading the data, but again, no crank.
I went on go get batterys cause i knew that was best to get them old suckers outta there, i was trying to wait 5 more days
for a check coming to pay for it, but the credit came out once again....
Still same, no crank...
doing all these checcks and batts in a parking lot when it was like 10 with wind chill, good times, 2 hrs for tow, to get to buds driveway.
I had just been doing some work not long ago to the truck and knew my batts were getting too weak
on starting (im aware of the ficm), when it hadnt been warmed up I do what i always do and charge them up because it doesn't move a lot,
which i also know isnt good for battery life, but the truck is mostly used for going to the U.P.
When that pausing had been happening on the recent startups I assumed it was battery related. It wasn't until 2 days later waiting for warmer
temps outside to work on it, because my guess was starter, that I recalled how it had been pausing, did a google search on that,
and sure enough, told me that scenario is likely starter death coming real soon. I also just read, low batts could damage starters as well.... oh well,
thing was rusted and dirty as flip, like it had been on there a long dang time, truck is an 05, and on removal it had the front part like a 6.0 starter does.
I was excited to see that because I had decided to go with the 6.7 replacement, and was hoping someone hadnt already put a 6.4 or 6.7 on there.
I bought the trk with 199k, in 2016 and now have 253 or so. I was pretty sure when thinking back to crank speed I still had a 6,0 starter on it.
anyways, cranks flippin fast as hell now with the 6.7!!! Dig it.
As a note I had just done an injector harness because of cylinder 1 code, decided to do an IPR too, and glad I did, it was the newer style but
screen showed some fatigue, after getting all back together it started and still threw that #1 misfire and balance, I was bummed cause now im
thinking its the injector, my FMP was always showing 47.5 and up, so was hoping that wasnt ficm related. anyway, one friday after work family was gone,
was having some brews and im like screw it, ill put injector harness 3 to1 and 1 to 3, ran bad obvioulsy but no code???
I switch it back and the truck was idling perfect.... so perhaps too much corrosion on the plug or seat for #1, and all that on off cleaned it a bit.
Im not sure, so I went back and used cleaner and dielectric grease.
Hope that helps someone,
john
