Time required to replace starter?

Went to vote this morning but my truck didn't want to leave the firehouse parking lot. Just went "click" when I turned the key. I already had this problem once, fixed it by replacing the battery terminals. This time I cleaned the terminals, and tried a new starter relay, no luck. Next I'm gonna get up under it and check the starter connections, but worst case how long am I gonna need to replace the starter? I'm trying to figure out whether to replace it were it sits or try to get it back home somehow first.

i cant give you a time in minutes but it doesnt take very long at all. theres just 2 bolts holding it in and a couple wires you have to unplug. its very easy and pretty quick to do.

That's what I figured. Might take me twice as long as you, but still doesn't sound bad. Thanks for the info.

Should probably be 30 mins. or less, depending on how many digits get bumped or mashed.

Good estimate assuming you don't twist the bolts off that hold the starter in place. Might want to hit them with some penetrating fluid. Also, don't overtighten the brass bolt that the wires are connected to. I did this and twisted off the lug. Finally got the wire back on the stump that was left, but blew quite a bit of time.

Well, turns out it was the small wire going to the spade connector on the starter. The insulation is all cracked and falling off, and the spade was not rusty but was dirty. No wonder, why put a spade connector up under the vehicle on a critical part? I cleaned the connector with WD40 and wiped the spade off, and it cranked just fine.

I'll probably redo all that wiring the right way so my truck don't strand me any more.

Glad you figured that out. My truck did the exact same thing and I went through the exact same routine as you. Wiggled the starter wires and haven't had a problem since. Those are the fixes I like.
