Doesn't the entire dash need to come out to replace it?
Will be a lot easier mounting one under the dash, in a door, or hung from the ceiling ...
... or have it on a long wire for placement like in the bed or setting it on the roof while you do stuff. Could house it in an old drive in hang on door glass .... or make one. Old Troopers would tell me about having a speaker to the police car radio on a 100 foot spool with clips to keep close to hear the police radio while fishing.

If stereo, have two, or use a 2 in1 speaker.
Nope, just one where it came form the factory.
I already have a pair of high end speakers that will go in the doors when I have a real sound system installed.
Until then, just something to listen to talk radio.

Well, I'd just hang one from the ash tray on a hook, or up on my gun rack near my ears, run wire under the mat on the hump or under the sill plate ... and up behind the seat.
If really were looking for simple, cover the grille with thin cloth and lay the speaker face up on the bare floor behind the seat, or use double sided tape and stick it to the back wall, magnet will help if it has a big one.
I've the same problem, eventually I'll have a nice stereo. But in the mean time I've got a small JBL bluetooth speaker that sits on the dash that can be heard even over my loud exhaust. JBL Flip 6 is the model.

Likely a clearer sound too not baking in the heat since the '70s.
Well if even you have real long skinny arms, and are a contortionist you are still not easily getting that OEM speaker out. Pretty sure it does not come out from the top, so have to remove the 2 nuts and drop is down and remove from underneath. Best to just get a old style CB remote speaker and wire it in and toss it on the dash. And those 2 nuts are in between the defroster vent. Also see the PDF attachment, like I said I am not sure it part #004405 come off, if it does you migth be in luck.

No. You access it from the top. The speaker grille is held in place by two screws. You'll need a stubby screwdriver to remove/replace the screws. The speaker drops in from the top once the speaker grille is removed.
My '73 has speakers in the doors for the stereo, so I used the dash speaker for my CB radio!

The two screws on my truck only release the speaker to drop down. The grill is permanent.

I just want to make sure what size the original speaker was so I can order one and have it on hand when I start working on it.
This is where the speakers will get mounted in the doors and I am still looking for where to have the 5x7 speakers mounted.
I would rather have a car audio dealer install my door speakers than me making a mess out of it.
For now I just want the AM radio to work and if the dash has to come out to put a speaker back in there then so be it.
That's just how I want it.
That's where the factory would have mounted optional speakers and that is too small of an area, including the speaker grill on the door panel for the speakers I will be using.
I already checked that out when I had my door panels off.
