probably not a ford....
can you folks help identify this axle please? notice the distinctive ribs on the front as well as the bumper mounting above the pinion. the rear cover dips in slightly on the right side... in other words... not a perfectly round "bowl".
thanks
What's the wheel bolt pattern? Is there any other distinguishing or oddball differences on it? Here's a chart of rear covers, not sure if any of them are close matches. The AMC one seems similar, but AMC axles would be easy to identify with their 2 piece axle and hub assembly with large, exposed nut on the end.
I thought that era BOP had the carrier housing bolted to a separate singular unified axle tube where as this subject rear end has a carrier housing with moldings for two distinct axle tubes...
I thought too it could be AMC20 or GM 10 bolt 8.5". But like Bmoran said, "I couldn't make everything line up". I have spent a couple of hours on google already researching this and Google just doesn't want to give up any information on this axle!
-The cover really does resemble the AMC20 but this has 10 instead of 12 bolts on the cover. The cover reinforcement stamping between the cover bolt holes look identical.
-It does resemble the GM 10 bolt but it does not have the distinguishing features of the GM's housing.
-its 5 lug on 4.5" , the rims that came with it are 15"
-fill plug shown in pic below
-don't forget the very distinguishable two curved ribs on the front.
lol- the chain drive is not factory. This axle is on a home built tractor. A smaller sprocket is on the driveshaft which drives the larger sprocket on the diff. We picked this rear end up in the early eighties from scrap collector. so I am guessing that would put this rear end at least early 70's or earlier. Our goal is to re-purpose this rear on another project...and just trying to figure out what we have here.
thanks all
