Red face plug wire

I have a good 1995 The truck has no wires on it now. ?f150 5.0. I have a new set of plug wires. Can someone tell me where the plugs go. the distributer has no markings as to which is #1 , or which way around the distributor turns. I have the fireing order. .1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. can someone tell me how to put the wires on?

Is there a sticker under the hood that looks like this:

This is also very helpful:

ISSUE: Engine miss, spark knock, buck/jerk, surge and other driveability concerns may be caused by induction crossfire. This occurs because of improperly routed spark plug wires.

ACTION: If spark plug replacement is performed, the correct firing order and spark plug wire routing is essential to prevent the possibility of induction crossfire between cylinders. Refer to the following procedures for inspection of the spark plug wire routing and firing order. Properly reroute the spark plug wires if required.

Whenever a high-tension ignition wire is removed from a spark plug, the distributor cap, or the coil to perform a maintenance operation, Silicone Dielectric Compound must be applied to the boot before reconnection. Using a small clean screwdriver, apply a thin layer of Silicone Dielectric Compound on the entire interior surface of the boot. Do not apply compound to metal terminals.

FIRING ORDER

The firing order for 1987-1993 5.0Ls is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. If #7 and #8, or #2 and #4 spark plug wires are routed next to each other at the separation bracket, an induction crossfire condition can occur.

The firing order for 1994-up 5.0Ls & all 5.8Ls is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 (including Coil-On-Plug). On these vehicles with distributor, the #1 and #3, or #5 and #6 spark plug wires must be separated to eliminate the possibility of an induction crossfire.

To eliminate the possibility of the coil wire becoming disconnected, route the coil wire under the spark plug wires at the distributor cap.

HOPEFULLY plug one will actually go on where the diagram shows. Someone could have stabbed it in a different spot. Try and see!

I believe there is a notch or tab or something on the distributor cap to mate with the casing. Probably more for keeping it from spinning than orientation, but you might make note of it. Plug 1 on that cap is where the rotor points when piston 1 is at top-dead-center of the compression stroke. On mine, it matches that diagram, but that's no guarantee yours is the same.

They are all that way and that’s how you “should” put it. You can lift the distro enough to have the gear disengage the cam, spin the rotor to anywhere, place it back down near a point and that becomes the new number one. If it doesn’t work using the diagram, that’s what happened most likely. If it doesn’t fire, pull the distributor, get cylinder 1 on top dead center on compression stroke, and put the distributor back in with the rotor as close to where 1 is on the cap. May have to lift it a time or 3 to twist the rotor so it lines up.

mine is off by two points, but I’m too lazy to correct it! Haha

This is very important. I learned my lesson after driving my truck for 10-15 years with an intermittent misfire.

The only way to know where #1 is in the cap is to pull #1 plug and turn it over motor with your thumb over the hole and when it gets pushed off from compression stop and line up the timing mark to TDC.
Now pop the cap off and see where the rotor is pointing to that is #1 and follow the firing order from there.

As was pointed out if the distributor was just dropped in with the motor on TDC you can have any tower on the cap be #1 and why you need to get the motor on TDC of the compression stroke before you check the cap.

What @FuzzFace2 said.

The #1 on the distributor cap is 100% useless if the distributor was not stabbed in correctly, as the rotor may bot be point at #1 when at top dead center (TDC).

You must check the timing, put #1 to TDC on the compression stroke. Then check that the rotor is pointing to #1 spark.

It's easy to get it wrong, like 180* out, so many do.
