Center console gear shifter.
A few days ago, the ignition tumbler would not return all the back, to allow removing the key, at the same time the squeeze ‘button’ on the shifter got funky.
Shop(not dealership) got it in this am, says repair to be $1,027.00 OEM parts NLA, will need to acquire from auto scrap outlets.
Does this sound reasonable? This is now our Son’s ‘backup’ vehicle, that we sold to him last week. TIA
Is the shop saying they'll need to drill out the ignition key cylinder lock in order to replace the cylinder? Without seeing what they've found, it sounds like a new ignition key cylinder might be all that's required to properly actuate the ignition and power energize the shift interlock (when the brake pedal is also pressed). But if they ignition key can rotate to the ACC (or is it Run?) position they should be able to remove the key cylinder.
The ignition key cylinder is not the issue, it’s a pin of some sort located below the console shifter, supposed that linkage has worn, and that somehow ties into the key cylinder. A few days ago, the shifter would not always move out of park on the first try.
I had a 2009 Explorer several years ago, and experienced the brake interlock not allowing shift out of Park. There was a solenoid below the shifter that was bad; I tied it off to get rid of that interlock completely.
