Another.. gear pattern thread!

Any comments on this pattern appreciated.

Axle is a Dana 60 with new Dana ring and pinion + new bearings.

Looks OK to me so far but drive side is up toward the toe.

Coast side looks good.

Backlash is .005 - might be a tad tight.

Should I work on increasing the backlash?

Thank You

Pinion too deep... .005 is a little tight though, so I would adjust backlash first. If still deep (toe) then take .002 out of pinion depth, then redo backlash and read.

Here's an interesting find. This is a Dana document that describes desired contact patterns. It says the drive side ought to be toward the toe end.. just so long as it doesn't run off the toe end.

Well, that is an interesting find... so, with that just adjust your backlash and read the pattern.

I'm getting lost. Am starting over trying a step-by-step method..

1 - using original carrier shims, adjust pinion depth to best align drive and coast side patterns with each other (fore and aft).
2 - use new carrier shim set to set backlash and center patterns.

Here is the latest pattern. Looks exactly like the first one, except with a bit more backlash. I'm thinking this looks good. Backlash is between .006 to .0075. Any comments on this before I close it up and give it a go?
