Another project to add to the list

With the success of the dc motor pre lube system an idea sparked in my mind….im generally dissatisfied with the filtering quality of our internal transmission filters and was wondering the best approach to improve that process.

i was previously going to use one of those tranny line to cooler replacement kits as the core for an external tranny filter cooler , needing a tranny line kit, a third line, and one of those H style bypass devices, aside from the filter head

…..but….cost of those tranny line kits being what they are …another option is to run a fitting at the tranny pan drain location…send that to a filter head …then from there send a line to another dc motor ..then send the return to an existing side pan npt. the beauty of this dc motor powered filter loop is that it doesn’t complicate the flow to the trans cooler. The dc motor supplier said his motor have a continuous duty rating and can handle tranny fluid.

the more I think about it the more I like the dc motor circular flow loop idea.

interesting thoughts. I wonder if fittings could be sourced for the return line for the service fill port on the passenger side port (10R140)

ZooDad

if Google AI is correct…size is 1/8” NPT, which is a standard oil feed and return size.

That port fitting is small

Here are a couple snapshots of ARod latest video

He used a 19mm ratcheting box wrench to remove it.
This is on a 24 10R140.

Here is the whole video. This part is about 7:00 mark

Oh boy, it's a slippery slope going down the filtering path. LOL. Add-on trans filter would be nice. DC motor would simplify things, but seems like it would burn out after a few years, especially at these temps 200F+.

In 2023, they apparently removed the side fill plug and put a drain w/ bung in the pan. You're supposed to fill it by pumping the trans fluid through the drain hole in the pan. There is an access port on top as ARod is showing.

What ever the npt size is there are adapters plugs. If it’s 3/8” npt and your putting in a 1/4” npt all you need is the appropriate adapter plugs.

What do you base your dissatisfaction of the filtering quality of the internal filter of these transmissions?

I just did a drain and fill and still have the fluid.....let me see if I can fill a mason jar with what drained out...another mason jar with the fluid after being filtered at 10 micron, and another mason jar with the fluid being filtered at 4 microns, and another mason jar with the fluid filtered at 2 microns.

would it make a difference in appearance. I don't know...but it would be interesting.

heres a popular pump that is rebranded on amazon and ebay for various oil and fuel uses. looks suitable..but the temp rating is only 140F, so these wont work....let me correct myself...it wont work for continuous duty ...but if you were to filter the trans fluid only while the fluid is cold/warm (some type of temp sensor switch) then it might have some limited suitability

The other thing that crossed my mind is you'll want a low-flow bypass type of setup. These pumps flowing 2-3 GPM not only prematurely wears out the pump, but would put too much resistance on it.

How about accessing one of the fluid ports on the transmission (I'm assuming there is at least 1), putting a snubber on it, and having return oil going back through the access port pictured above? Simple and effective.

this one is rated a 350F so no problem on the temp tolerance.

its about 3 times the cost of the previous pump but it has the heat rating and can be put into service for continuous duty since its rated at 10,000 hrs

I have one of these now for the engine pre luber Im running , so one thing Im curious about is if it will run at 12 or 6 volts. for recirculating filtering we dont need the max PSI and could still do well at half or even 1/3rd of the max PSI rating.

the filter mount I plan to use is a left over AMSOIL universal bypass filter mount. it has 1-16 threads so I can use the stock ford filter (which I have a dozen of ) , the baldwin 8 micron filter, or even the AMSOIL 2 micron filter. no check valve would be needed. wired to an upfitter switch.

the trans pan is the AFE trans pan. the feed for the pump will be the bottom and the return from the pump would be to the side npt port

With the AFE pan, that's a pretty simple and effective setup. Honestly, if you're pumping 3 GPM, I don't even see the need to run the pump on all the time. It'll filter the entire pan and then some in a matter of minutes. That'll help extend the life of the pump as well.
