I foolishly didn’t set TDC before taking the heads and timing chain off. So is there an easy way to put it at TDC so I can put on the new timing chain set? Have the new cam in and heads back from the machine shop and ready to go! Like out in the first two lifters one number one, and turn the crank with old tonight set back on and gage where they are at compared to the number one piston?
And on a related engine rebuild question, when putting the oil pan back on (with new oil pump), what rtv do yall use? And it’s gonna be tricky as I’m putting this back in with the engine in. Was able to get the pan off and oil pump off without having to jack up the engine.
And when I use whichever rtv, do I put it on both sides, or just the oil pan side? I have gasket cinch and black rtv, but will get whatever’s best!
I’m sure I’ll be back for more, but this is where I’m at now! 🤪
There should be markers on the gear set. Align the marks up. You can pull the cap and see which cylinder the rotor is pointing at, should be #1. If not your 180 deg off.
The heads and intake and distributor are not on the engine block. Just tying to find out how to get the number one position to TDC on the compression stroke so I can put the gear set on with the marks lined up.
The timing set will put every thing at TDC if you align the marks up. The crank key way should be at 12:00.
Crank keyway straight up is top dead center. Cam position dictates if compression or 180 out. cam gear mark should point straight down. You might have to put cam gear on without chain and turn by hand to get it close.
